Telecom Dictionary - K
K - (1) Placing K after a number it means to multiply
that number by 1024 times, and (2) K is a symbol meaning Kelvin.
Ka-Band - The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum
allotted for satellite transmission in the 18 to 31 GHz frequency
range.
KB - see Kilobyte.
Kbps - This stands for Kilobits Per Second, and it refers
to transmission speed of 1,000 bits per second.
Kelvin (K) - A measurement of temperature that has the
same scale as the Celsius scale. Zero K represents the temperature
absolute zero (it corresponds to -273 C).
Kermit - This an asynchronous file transfer protocol usually
used for text transfers that was developed at Columbia University
in 1981.
Keyboard - A series of switches, arranged like a typewriter,
to send information or commands to a computer.
Key Pad - A touchtone dial pad.
Kilobyte (KB) - 1000 bytes.
Kilohertz (KHz) - This refers to a unit of frequency equal
to 1,000 Hertz.
Kludge - Any improvised (usu. from mismatched parts) hardware
solution.
Klystron - A microwave tube that amplifies signals by
using the interaction between an electron beam and the RF energy
on microwave cavities.
Ku-Band - The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum
allotted for satellite transmission in the 10.9 to 17 GHz frequency
range.
