Electronics wires and cables

This page lists some general information about wires and provides information for those looking to buy wires, cables, AV wires, coaxial and satellite cables.

Most electrical wires are made of copper for two reasons: (1) it has a low resistance to the flow of current, and (2) it is cheap.

Electrical wire sizes are identified according to the AWG (American Wire Gauge) standard. The classification is a bit counter-intuitive, as the smaller diameter wires have larger AWG values. A 16 AWG wire, for example, is smaller in diameter than a 12 AWG wire.

Television audio and video information and internet data are carried by coaxial cables (and fiber optics in some cases.)

Wires are insulated because if two bare wires touch each other then there is a short circuit; a broken wire prevents current from flowing and is called an open circuit.

If you need to join two wires into one longer wire, remove the insulation with wire strippers and join the wires by twisting or soldering. When soldering, try to avoid both burning the plastic wire or cable insulation and letting the solder run under the insulation (this is called wicking).
