If you're in the market to buy new speaker wires, the first thing you need to know is this: the principle factor that determines your speakers' performances is the level of resistance in the speaker circuit. This circuit is merely the speaker wire that connects the speaker and amplifier terminals (this also includes the amplifier and speaker system impedance). There is also contact resistance at both sets of connecting terminals.

(Side-note: impedance is the opposition to flow of AC current due to resistance, capacitance, and inductance plus DC resistance.)

If both sets of connectors (speaker & amplifier) are clean and you have a good quality amplifier (with a low impedance) then your speaker system impedance and speaker wire resistance will determine the quality of your system's sound.

Your speaker system's impedance is a factor of both how nice your speakers are and how you've got them all hooked up together. (We may have more on this later, but this page is only about speaker wires.)

Regarding a wire's resistance, a value of less than 5% of the nominal speaker impedance would probably work well with nearly all speaker systems. To achieve this optimal resistance, you need to make sure to use the right size wire for your job. Matching the length of the speaker wire with the resistance of the speaker on the following table will tell you the correct size wire to install. This table is correct for two-conductor wire, meaning that one wire goes out to the speaker and one goes back again. (This is standard speaker wire.)

If you have a resistance that is too high (if you choose wire that is too small), then there will be an audibly noticeable loss in power (i.e., the sound won't be as loud).

If you have a resistance that is too low (if you choose wire is too large), then there is no quality improvement, but you pay more than necessary. But you will have allowed room for future improvements in your speaker system.
