Satellite TV Dishes
A satellite dish is not much different in purpose
than a television antenna; the biggest difference (in our opinion)
between standard television antennas and satellite dishes is that
satellite TV dishes have been designed to gather broadcast signals
that come from space (specifically, from a satellite). Most satellite
dishes are parabolas (meaning that are shaped like a large, shallow
bowl), and this is so the received signals can be reflected and
concentrated at one point, called the focal point.
This focal point is the raison d'etre of the satellite
dish. You see, the signals that have been transmitted from the
satellite are too weak to be of use in their current form, so they
need to be directed by the satellite dish to the focal point, whereat
the strengthened signal will enter the physical satellite dish system
via the feedhorn.
But the signal still is not strong enough to work effectively
with the satellite receiver so it is passed through the LNB (low
noise block-downconverter), which has the purpose of amplifying
(i.e., strengthening) and filtering the signal (i.e., removing the
noise).
(To note: any unwanted interference that is present in the signal
is defined as noise.)
One of the most important things you need to pay attention to
when installing satellite dishes is to make sure that there is a
clear view to the south. If there are large obstacles, meaning things
like trees or houses, in between the transmitting satellite and
the satellite TV dish, then there will be noticeable noise in your
signal.
It is helpful to classify the types of satellite dishes into
two main distinctions (specifically for the home user):
- DBS (direct broadcast satellite) dishes. These small 18"
satellite dish antennas work with subscription service providers,
such as DirecTV or Dish Network, that use satellites to broadcast
multiple channels of TV programming to paying customers.
- Satellites that are assembled to pick of C-band satellite
dish programming, much of which is free to satellite dish owners.
This is definitely the route for satellite enthusiasts.
Satellite dishes today either have one or multiple feedhorns.
A satellite dish will have multiple feedhorns so that different
TVs in the house can watch different programs.
If you want to purchase a C-band satellite dish or a single (without
any receivers) Direct TV or Dish Network compatible dish then click
the yellow link at the top of this page.
But if you want to start new Direct TV or Dish Network then our
free
satellite dish page. You can get a free satellite dish and up
to five free receivers (and installation is free, too!).
