Satellite TV Antennas
The term satellite antenna is actually synonymous with
satellite dish, and technically, a satellite dish is just a type
of antenna. All satellite antennas, from those that range from the
very large (tens or hundreds of feet) to the very small in scale
(18 inches) have some of the same basic components. Having these
basic components is what makes them a satellite antenna.
- Satellite antennas all have a parabolic (in the shape of
a shallow bowl) dish, which has the purpose of concentrating
the received signals at the focal point of the parabola. This
is necessary because the incoming signal is still to weak for
any sort of processing.
- At the focal point of the parabola, all satellite antennas
have a feedhorn. It is at the feedhorn that the concentrated
signal enters the satellite system for amplification, filtering,
and processing.
- Once the signal has entered the feed (meaning, the physical
wiring of the system) via the feedhorn, it will be amplified
and filtered (to remove the noise) by the LNB of the satellite
antenna. LNB stands for low noise block down converter.
- Then the newly strengthened signal will enter the processing
components of the satellite system, which are not technically
part of the satellite antenna. With satellite TV, the signal
enters and is processed by the receiver.
