LNB & LNBF satellite equipment

LNB - This stands for "low noise block-downconverter" and is a device that processes satellite signals that have been directed by a parabolic satellite dish into a feedhorn, all the while trying to introduce as little noise into the signal as possible. A typical LNB will consist of a microwave detector that is followed by a low-noise, high-gain amplifier and then a frequency converter. The purpose of the frequency converter is to down-convert a block of frequencies (i.e., a lumped group of satellite channels) to a lower frequency range (between about 900 to 2200 MHz) for the satellite receiver to process.

If the feedhorn is integrated with the LNB into a single mechanical device, then it is called a LNBF.

LNBF - This stands for "low noise block-downconverter feedhorn" and it amplifies the signal that has been collected on the parabolic satellite dish. It relies on power that is supplied by the satellite receiver to operate.

Feedhorn - This is the physical point of entry for the satellite signal.

Important: A single LNBF has the ability to feed only one receiver; to feed two or more receivers, a dual LNBF satellite dish must be used.
