Dish Network Receivers
Once the television signals leave the satellites in space and
begin to travel back to earth, some are destined to be captured
by a Dish Network satellite dish and processed by a Dish Network
receiver. A typical stationary DBS satellite dish would probably
be able to pick up signals from 3 or so different satellites and
it is the receiver's job to sort out all the information into something
meaningful.
It is the purpose of the Dish Network receivers to do
the following things:
- Because satellite signals are transmitted in the MPEG-2
format (this is a digital form), Dish Network satellite receivers
must turn the signals into a form that all televisions can display
(i.e., an analog format). If you have a television that is capable
of processing digital signals, you should consider using an
HDTV satellite receiver.
- All of the Dish Network satellite channels come lumped together
as one complete programming signal. The receiver must first
isolate that larger signal from all of the other signals the
dish has gathers, and then it must pull out just that particular
channel that the television viewer requested. You may notice
that this means that you need a separate Dish Network receiver
for each TV in your house. This is true, but easy to accomplish
if you start new service with either the DishNetwork or DirecTV.
Both of these providers give free equipment to new customers
(for up to five rooms!).
- Since providers don't want everyone watching their satellite
programming for free, they encrypt the signal to protect their
interests, and Dish Network receivers de-scramble that provider's
signal.
- The Dish Network's interactive programming guide is displayed
by the receiver.
- They keep a log of your pay-per-view shows.
- They allow lock-out options for parents.
- Dish Network receivers can have integrated DVRs (digital
video recorders), called DishDVR.
