Free Direct TV satellite dishes
It's best if you think of a Direct TV satellite dish as
just another type of antenna, whose purpose is to receive broadcast
signals from a source in space (i.e., a satellite). All Direct TV
satellite dishes that are meant to receive television broadcasts
are parabolic (in the shape of a bowl) and focus the received signal
(appropriately enough, at the focal point) into a beam so it can
enter the satellite system at the feedhorn and be directed to the
satellite receiver.
Direct TV satellites up in space have the capability to receive
and transmit information but the Direct TV satellite dishes on Earth
can only receive signals. Satellite dishes have their particular
shape so that the signals coming towards Earth, which are relatively
weak, can be focused (and thus strengthened) at the parabola's focal
point. At the focal point of the Direct TV satellite dish, there
is a feedhorn, which is commonly integrated with the LNB (low noise
block-downconverter) to create a LNBF (low noise block-downconverter
feedhorn).
Once the signal has entered the Direct TV satellite dish
system via the feedhorn it passes into the LNB, which has
the purpose of amplifying it and filtering out the noise (the LNB
or LNBF must also introduce as little noise as possible into the
signal).
(Side-note: noise is any unwanted electrical inference in the
signal.)
One of the best ways to ensure noise isn't introduced into the
system is to make sure there is a clear path (i.e., no houses or
trees) between the satellite (in space) and the Direct TV satellite
dish.
If you want to be able to watch different channels on each of
the televisions in your house, not only will you need multiple satellite
receivers, but you'll also need a Direct TV satellite dish that
can extract more than one signal at a time. This means that you'll
need a Direct TV dish with more than one feedhorn. (This is starting
to become the norm with satellite dishes).
If you want to buy a Direct TV satellite dish on its own (i.e.,
without buying any other equipment as well), then you should follow
the shopping link near the top of the page.
But if you want to start new satellite service from Direct TV,
you should visit one of the retailers listed on our
free
satellite TV dish page, and you can get all of your satellite
equipment for free (including a free dish, up to five free receivers,
and free pro-installation of your new equipment).
