Satellite TV FAQs
Visit our
satellite TV providers page to learn more about starting satellite
service.
Q. Can I get local
channels, too?
A. Of course.
You can do this in two ways. (1) Both Dish Network and
Direct TV offer local programming choices that you can include in
your subscription. (2) Or you could use a television antenna
to pick up the local channels broadcast over the airways (this connection
runs through your satellite receiver). Also, most cable providers
offer a local channel package, which usually runs around $10 a month.
Q. What's the
advantage of satellite TV over cable television?
A. With
satellite television, you have a lot of flexibility in determining
your channel lineup. There are actually more channels out
there than your cable operation lets on. The cable companies
just offer the channels that will give them the highest profit margin.
If the channel cost costs more than they are willing to pay, or
there is a small audience, that channel won't be offered.
With satellite TV, though, you get to choose what channels you pay
for. There are just more viewing options with satellite.
Q. Do satellite
providers offer international channels?
A. Yes.
In fact, both DirecTV and the Dish Network offer international programming
options that far surpass what most cable providers can boast.
(The Dish Network is especially strong in this area.) For
more information regarding this topic, see
satellite TV channels guide.
Q. Is it easy
for apartment dwellers to get satellite TV?
A. It's
easy and painless. Just like with a house, you just need to
face the dish towards the south.
Q. Do all the
TVs in the house have to watch the same channel?
A. No.
This is likely to be a myth started by the cable companies, and
it may accurately describe what operating a home satellite system
was like a few decades ago. But today, each television in
your house has a separate satellite receiver, so everyone can watch
what they want. All of the standard packages from the Dish
Network or Direct TV come with this multi-room system capability.
Q. Is there satellite
internet access available?
A. The two
DirecTV retailers this site lists at the bottom of the page both
provide satellite internet access. It's a great choice for
people who live too far out in the country for DSL service.
